What Is ‘Family Law’?

Family law covers a broad range of topics. Our practice handles many, many other legal matters, but they fall under a different ‘category’ of law other than Family Law. Please check out our blog and our practice area pages for other types of matters and areas of law we can help you with!

Here at Lisa York Law our ‘Family Law’ practice covers these types of civil law matters;

DIVORCE / ANNULMENT:

This the termination of legally recognized family relationships and ancillary matters, including divorce, annulment, property settlements, ‘spousal support’, (also known as “alimony”), child support, shared parental responsibility and child time-sharing (also known as “custody and visitation”).

ADOPTION:

An adoption is a civil law matter that covers the adoption of a child and, in some cases, an adult. Our firm handles step-parent or family member adoptions.

PATERNITY:

Paternity actions are civil law proceedings to establish and disestablish paternity. This can involve the administration of paternity testing.

TEMPORARY CUSTODY BY FAMILY MEMBERS:

These are matters specifically allowed in Florida law that establish legal custody of children by someone other than their natural parents. This can include family members or even “family-like” members.

NAME CHANGE:

For various reasons, someone may need to legally change their name. This can involve minors or adults.
